design challenge:

TRANSFORMING OUR VIEW OF CONCRETE AS A MATERIAL

Concrete has become synonymous with brutalism, seen as a dense, dark, heavy material mostly found in rectangles scattered across the city scape. I wanted to subvert this preconception by using concrete to create an angular, slightly delicate, light. The aim was to simultaneously push the limits of what the material could do, as well as what people expected it to be.

The production and casting of this light was quite complicated, requiring the development of a lightweight concrete composite, as well as the insertion of steel reinforcements for certain elements of the structure.
